Luce earns Eastern podium in giant slalom

BARTLETT, N.H. –- Attitash hosted the 2010 Eastern High School Championships at which alpine racers from as far south as New Jersey and Pennsylvania and as far west as Wisconsin competed.

On Saturday, nearly 110 of the best high school ski racers competed in the ladies slalom event. Favorite to win, Katie Cutting 50.29 (1) 59.96 (1) 1:42.25 wearing bib #1 of team Vermont did prevail as the eastern slalom champ.

Twelve of Maine’s top alpine ski racers in all classes competed on the girls’ state team. Jay’s Lindsey Jacques 52.21 (6) 55.12 (26) 1:47.33 finished with the best slalom time for Maine finishing 14th. Right behind her on the scoring board was Mt. Abram’s Emily Luce 53.90 (13) 54.74 (23) 1:48.64 who placed in the top-20 finishing 15th.

MTA sophomore Erin Luce ran into troubles on the first slalom run, but finished her runs without disqualification. Similar trouble occurred for Rangeley’s Emma Christensen who did not finish her first slalom run.

Alex Rose of Livermore Falls finished 6th in the EHSC slalom event.

Racers returned on Sunday for ladies’ giant slalom action. Wearing bib #6, Emily Luce ripped through the gates placing herself third on the first run, 0.09 of a second behind the leader. In consistent finishes, the state giant slalom champion 1:00.34 (3) 57.99 (3) 1:58.33 was also third on the second run which earned herself an Eastern podium spot medal with a bronze. Luce, also the state slalom champion, missed the top title earned by Taylor Burgart 1:00.46 (4) 57.46 (1) 1:57.92 of team N.Y. by 0.41 of a second in combined results.

Jacques finished in the top-20 finishing 17th for team Maine. Erin Luce placed 34th and Kallgren ended up 42nd on the day. Christensen’s troubles continued in her second giant slalom run with a DNF which took her out of contention.

Rose had the best Maine finishes in boys’ action landing 14th on the scoreboard.
