Tree grafting is subject of talk
STRONG — On April 7, the Strong Historical Society will host “The Basics of Grafting” with Dave Fuller of the University of Maine Cooperative Extension.
Have you ever wondered how to save Gramp’s old apple tree so it’s not gone forever? Or want to have more than one variety on one tree?
Participants are urged to bring some scions to trade with their neighbors. (A scion should be the end of an apple branch with new growth measuring about eight inches long; store moist in plastic in the refrigerator.)
Most gardeners can successfully graft fruit trees with a little practice, Fuller says.
The historical society’s potluck supper starts at 6 p. m. at the Strong Historical Society’s home on Main Street. After a short business meeting at 7 p.m., Fuller will show how to keep those old heritage varieties going for generations to come.
There’s no charge for the event, but bring a dish to share.
