Steel drummers to converge on ‘Loaf
CARRABASSETT VALLEY — The 20th Annual PanNE Steelband Festival, which will include steel drummers from all over New England, ages 8 to 80, will perform on the lawn in front of the Sugarloaf Inn beginning at 10 a.m. Sunday, May 2 and ending around 4 p.m.
Organizers urge attendees to dress accordingly and to bring their lawn chairs and/or blankets. There will be at least 10 bands playing under the tent, including the Western Mountain Trash Can Band and students in the MSAD #58 Steel Drum program. At the conclusion of the show, all the bands will perform together.
Lunch will be servied by the Stratton Lions Club; snacks and drinks will also be sold. Tshirts, designed by Claudia Diller will be for sale, and there will be a raffle.
The raffle prizes include: rafting package for two from Northern Outdoors, Maine Huts and Trails membership, Kingfield POPS tickets for four, and many other prizes such as jewelry, gifts items, gift baskets, and certificates for local shopping, restaurants and lodging. Proceeds from the t-shirt and raffle sales will support the SAD #58 Steel Drum program.
This free event is hosted by the Western Mountain Trash Can Band, a community group that spreads the joy of live steel drum music throughout mountain towns to help support steel drum programs in the local school district (donations are always welcomed).
Also, the Atlantic Clarion Steel Band will perform at the Sugarloaf Inn Saturday evening, 6:30 to 9 p.m. (admission is $5).
