Raymond William Chapman
RANGELEY — Raymond William Chapman, 70, formally of Killingworth, Conn. died Monday, April 19, 2010 at Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington.
Born in Usquepaugh, R.I. March 3, 1940, he was the son of Robert and Anna (McCall) Chapman. Ray was a long haul trucker until he became a paraplegic from an accident in 1969. He married Joanne (Atteridge) Chapman on June 23, 1972. Together they began Hayshaker Antiques. In 1982 with their daughter, Beth, they opened an antiques store on Main Street in Rangeley which they operated until 2004. Ray could often be seen in the summer refinishing furniture on his front porch at their camp on Loon Lake Road. In 1993 they built a handicap accessible home where their camp had been.
He enjoyed fishing and hunting. In 2005 he successfully participated in the moose hunt with his nephew and special son. He was a member of the Rangeley Region Guides’ and Sportsmen’s Association, Sportsmen’s Alliance of Maine, and National Rifle Association.
He is survived by his wife, Joanne; his son, Daniel and wife, Melissa, of West Kingston, R.I.; step-daughter, Beth Hinman and husband, Jeffrey, of Eustis; and a special son, David L. Bachelder of Rangeley; granddaughters, Samantha and Briana Chapman of West Kingston, R.I.; his nephew, Albert Chapman and wife, Sonja, and family of Plainfield, Conn.; his niece Gail Tardif and husband, Lloyd, and family of Fort Myers, Fla.; and many other nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents, brothers and sister and two nephews.
At Raymond’s request there will be no formal funeral.
