MTA pitching silences competition

SALEM -– The Mt. Abram boys’ baseball team came out with a season opener win last week in a home game against Jay on Thursday. This was followed by an away game victory when they traveled to Madison Friday.
Combined, the Roadrunners gave up just three hits over two games. They outscored the competition 32-0, and struck out 22 out of the possible 30 over two fiveinning mercy rule games.
On Monday, May 3 they faced the Dirigo Cougars (2- 1) in a big Mountain Valley Conference match-up which may have been the Roadrunners’ first challenge this season. Dirigo took their first loss this season against Telstar (1-1) by the score of 6-5. Telstar took their first loss against Livermore Falls in a 3-2 final.
Senior left-hander Aaron McGinness had only four balls hit into play against Jay on Thursday. Two hits were defended nicely by freshman shortstop Jay Chenard for outs. A bunt was fielded for the out by senior captain catcher Dylan Tisor. Tisor also pulled in a foul ball for an out. All other outs came by way of the K with 11 recorded strike outs for McGinness who is credited with the 14-0 shutout win.
MTA’s Will London smacked a two RBI double over the centerfielder’s head to spark a seven-run fourth for the Roadrunners. Chenard and sophomore Josh Beedy went 2-for-2, while Hank Poulin, Tim Smith and Tisor all recorded a pair of hits apiece.
Southpaw Tim Smith came out against Madison and fanned 11 batters giving up two hits for the shut out performance. The 18-0 game featured Tisor who went 4-for-4, drove in eight RBIs including a grand slam.
McGinness went 3-for-5 on the day including a tworun homer in a slugfest put on by the Roadrunners.
In softball, the Lady Roadrunners fell to a 0-2 record with narrow losses against a tough Jay (2-1) team. On Thursday the Lady Roadrunners lost 10-8 followed by a 5-4 loss against the Lady Bulldogs of Madison.
The Roadrunner varsity squads will head to Livermore Falls today, May 5 and return home on Friday for a 4:30 p.m. start against Carrabec. On Monday May 10 the teams will travel to Telstar for an MVC matchup.
