Informational meeting on intervale land set

KINGFIELD — Do residents here want to protect the town-owned, former Gilmore/Newell intervale land from future unwarranted development? Do they want to consider limiting it to the current use of wastewater treatment, public recreation and agriculture by placing a conservation easement on it?

That is the gist of an article on the warrant they will be asked to vote on at the Saturday June 5 town meeting.

An informational meeting has been scheduled for 7 p.m. Monday, May 24 at Webster Hall so that residents understand the intent and long term ramifications of the question.

“One of the goals in purchasing the land through the TIF process was to preserve the view-shed and open space of the properties,” says John Witherspoon.

Witherspoon, a long-time resident of Kingfield is one of the organizers of the May public meeting and was involved with crafting the TIF agreement that now applies to those parcels and other areas around town.

He will be present May 24 along with the Friends of Kingfield Farmland, a group of local residents that has been working for the past two years on protecting the scenic intervale lands from development.

They will answer all technical and legal questions associated with the article, such as: What is a conservation easement? Could a ball field and snow mobile trail and other public recreational uses be included in the easement? Could the wastewater treatment facility be expanded, if needed?
