Recycling may get easier by way of single sort
KINGFIELD — Kingfield-New Portland Transfer Station board members met last Thursday with Alison McCrady of Eco- Maine who was there to provide a financial analysis of the savings that could be realized should the transfer station go to single sort recycling, according to Kingfield Administrative Assistant Doug Marble.
The concept of single sort recycling includes the transfer station purchasing a compactor and two containers financed over five years. All mixed commodities will go into the compactor and be shipped to the Portland based material recovery facility.
It is felt that if recycling becomes easier for residents because they will not have to separate material, more recycling may occur. More recycling, Marble explained, means less costs associated with tipping fees and municipal solid waste hauling charges. Marble said it was explained that about 46 tons a year of MSW would be diverted to recyclables should the operation go with EcoMaine.
It was also explained that using a compactor to compress material would lower transportation costs compared to shipping it loose.
Marble said that the analysis explained that the transfer station could realize a savings of about one-third of the cost should the board decide to go to single sort recycling. He also said the transfer station staff would not spend nearly as much time on managing recyclables. “It could be spent on transfer station duties instead,” Marble said.
A motion was made to decide at their next meeting whether they want to separate from Sandy River Recycling and work with EcoMaine in the future. The next Transfer Station meeting is July 8 in Kingfield at 6:30 and Sandy River Recycling representatives will be asked to attend, Marble said.
Also on July 8 there will be a public hearing to amend a new ordinance that will help to enforce rules of the transfer station. Under this ordinance violations can be enforced by keeping a record of occurrences. Such records can be used against a resident who wishes to use the facility.
