LIVERMORE — The Second Annual Civil War Reenactment Weekend at the Washburn-Norlands Living History Center will take place June 12 and 13. Living historians dressed as Confederate and Union infantry will scrimmage with replica weaponry on the grounds of the 19th century historic settlement.

Visitors at the Civil War reenactment will become engaged in the lives of soldiers and civilians. The twoday event will include encampments the public can visit, full-scale battles, cannon artillery, the “Town of Unity” civilian camp, farm-life living history, field music, 19th century fashion show, “dress-up” tent with old clothing, sewing circle where attendees can help make quilts for the Norlands museum and post office, where they can write a letter to a Civil War soldier.

Visitors can also join in and play a game of 1864 town ball with the Dirigo Vintage Baseball Club and enjoy a Saturday ham and bean supper and contra dance, Sunday church service, exhibits and a lecture on the roles of the Washburn brothers in the Civil War, raffles, good food, children’s activities, and much more family fun.

Also planned is a reenactment of a Sanitary Fair (historic bazaars organized by the Sanitary Commissions of the Civil War era) which will include activities such as fortune-telling, Victorian calisthenics, kite-making, odd collections from the 1800s and much more. The event closes on Sunday afternoon with a Patriotic Concert in the historic meeting house by Mitch Thomas and Friends.

The event is organized by the 3rd Maine Company A, 20th Maine Company B and 15th Alabama Company G to benefit the Washburn-Norlands Living History Center. Civil War reenactors from across the region are invited to register.

Funds raised will help the center rebuild an historic barn lost in a disastrous fire in April 2008.

According to organizers, the 445 acres of rolling hills surrounding the historic Washburn mansion, library, meeting house, cape, sap-house, and one-room schoolhouse make Norlands an ideal place to experience the raids and skirmishes once fought in similar communities to the south. At last year’s event, which drew up to 2,000 visitors, one youthful visitor said, “I felt like I was IN history.”

Admission tickets for the public are $8 adults and $5 for children under 12 years old. Discounted weekend passes are available.
