Lady Roadrunners concluding best season of tennis

SALEM –- The Mt. Abram girls’ tennis team could quite possibly be having their best season of tennis. Last Wednesday they concluded their regular season finishing sixth in Heal Point standings with a 9-3 record.

“Yes, it’s the best year they have had and they are all excited,” said MTA coach Monica Hedstrom. “But they are also ready for summer vacation.”

Hedstrom attributes most of their success to her seniors. They played in the same positions last year so they have two years under their belts.

Hedstrom said they worked hard this year, and they did more drills and cross training to stay in shape.

Seniors, Meg Field, Hillary Eustis, Amanda Richards and Kaelyn Lecander were pointed out by Hedstrom as key assets. “Everyone has improved,” she added.

“Staci Plog and Hillary Chase had never played before. This was Clayre Plog’s first year playing in a varsity match and Raven Riendeau had never picked up a racket before and they are all helping with the success of the team.”

They have all worked hard and it shows when they play the long matches, Hedstrom explained. “We can typically outlast most other opponents.”

Hedstrom said her goal was to learn the sport better and just have fun. This year a goal was set to make the playoffs, she explained.

Early reports indicate that MTA will be playing NYA next Thursday, June 3 in a 3-6 bracket match-up.

The MTA boys’ squad also posted a couple of wins this season beating Carrabec twice. The boys’ program is in its building years under Coach Jeff Lampron.
