A few things that puzzle me…
Here are a few things that puzzle me having to do with the State, taxes, subsidies, etc.
To begin with, the last I knew the valuations of every town were based on the real estate and the value of property sold in the last year. My idea is: Why not base it on the average household income in the town instead?
Since the early 70s folks from out-of-state sold their homes for twice or three times what the same home would cost in Maine, and so they were able to buy “higher cost” homes in Maine that “natives” were not able to afford. So that’s one wrong base for the State to use in school budgets.
Next, ever since the Legislature voted to have the “Lottery” profits go into the “General Fund,” we (towns) don’t even get a percentage of that toward the town’s part of the budget. The voters (I’m one) only voted to let the Lottery in Maine because the profits would “go to education”! So now, every town’s share is higher and higher; and more and more is put onto us the taxpayers
by the State)! The final kybosh: the State is fining district towns for not joining RSUs. Which will end up costing us all more and more —for gas, for wear and tear (on busses), you name it!
What type of state government is this?
