Patriotic organ music planned

Watermelon Music Series

RANGELEY — Concert organist Robert Ludwig will present a Stars and Stripes Patriotic Concert on the grand church organ at Rangeley’s Church of the Good Shepherd Sunday, July 4 at 7 pm. There is no admission charge, but donations will be received to benefit Outreach and Music Programs within the Church.

Ludwig’s music selections will include such favorites as music from Handel’s “Fireworks Music,” and Bach’s “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring,” as well as a contemporary British composition appropriate for summers in Rangeley: “Sun Dance” by Bob Chilcott.

Another unique piece on the program will be Bach’s chorale fantasia on “Wo Gott der Herr nich bey uns halt.” This remarkable piece dates from 1705-1710, but was only discovered in March of 2008.

Ludwig will also be joined by the Rev. Jud Pealer to present a rare solo organ and narrator performance of Aaron Copland’s moving “Lincoln Portrait.” The concert will conclude with John Philip Sousa’s “The Stars and Stripes Forever,” followed by a patriotic sing-along.

Robert Ludwig, organist, conductor, teacher and church musician, has performed throughout the U.S., Canada and England. He holds degrees from Davidson College and Yale University, and served as choirmaster and organist for Christ Church Cathedral, Lexington, KY and Cathedral of the Incarnation, Garden City, NY.

Robert and Nancy Ludwig together have performed the complete organ works of Cesar Franck and J.S. Bach. Though he has lived in the New York area for the past twenty-five years, he has been a frequent yearround visitor to the Rangeley area for 35 years, and is just completing a four-year term as chair of the Loon Lake Association.
