(Contributed photo) LEWISTON — Thirteen premiere teams from around New England met in Lewiston for the ASA 18 U Class A Regional Tournament. The Asteroidz, consisting of players from, Jay, Telestar, Oak Hill and Mt. Abram, competed with the elite teams of New England.

Local players, Mt. Abram graduate Jillian Whithee and senior Molly McCafferty along with their teammates placed third in the tournament.

The Asteroids met The Northstars of Maine in their first game and defeated the Augusta team 10 to 1. They then met the Central Mass Bad Apples in a raindrenched game which saw the Bad Apples taking a 14 to 3 win, putting the Asteroidz into the losers’ bracket.

On Sunday the Asteroidz defeated the New Hampshire Diamond Gems 3 to 0. Next on tap was the Maine Tidal Wave whom the Asteroidz recently lost to in the Maine State Championship game two weeks ago.

The Wave took a 3 to 2 lead into the seventh inning. Brittany DiPompo got things started in the bottom of the last inning with a base hit. Jillian Whithee put down a perfect sacrifice bunt getting DiPompo to second base. Ashlee Quirrion followed with another hit and stole second leaving runners on second and third. Molly McCafferty chimed in with an infield hit to the right side tying the score at three. Alana White followed with the winning hit to center. This win put the Asteroidz into the semi-final game against the Central Mass Bad Apples.

Kayla Merrill found herself in a pitcher’s duel with both teams playing great defense. The Bad Apples led off the fourth with a base hit. The Asteroidz were able to get two outs as the base runner made it to third and soon scored on a pass ball. This would be the only run they would need to win the game as the Asteroidz were unable to score in this one.

A third place finish in this regional tournament was a great feat for this young and talented team.
