HARRISON — Last year’s state champion runners-up are back at it again. Last weekend the Franklin County 14-year-old Babe Ruth all-stars traveled to Harrison to compete in the District 3 tournament played at the Field of Dreams complex in Harrison. For the second straight year the “Flyers” swept the competition to take home the 2010 plaque.
Fans of the tournament saw just about everything from great pitching from Franklin County to big bats and impressive defense.
The Flyers took on Lewiston in game one last Friday and won 11-6. On Saturday they advanced to the championship game defeating Tri County East 9-8. The final contest was against Tri County again and the Flyers won 5-4 in walk-off fashion in extra innings.
In the bottom of the ninth, Flyer Ryan Greenman laid down the suicide bunt to score Cam Abbott for the walkoff win.
The weekend fans saw Flyer catcher Andrew Pratt gun down runners from stealing or sleeping. They saw double play combinations from the middle infielders. There was a line drive, 360 foot grand slam off the bat of Chad Luker and great pitching from Greenman, Abbott and Pratt.
For the second year the Flyers will advance to the state tourney to compete with the four other best teams in the state. This year’s tourney starts Wednesday, July 21 at Harrison.
