AVON –- Some might tell you what size of their motor is, but like fishing secrets, it’s unlikely you’ll hear the about the horsepower.
For the first year ever, organizers have created a new regulation track for truck drags in Avon. The new 30- by 300-foot track was built on Mike Auger’s property located behind the airport. A progressive drag will be used for a non-point event scheduled for Sunday, Aug. 22 beginning around 11 a.m.
The group hopes for a successful and fun-filled event and plans on continuing the it as a point pull next year. Lisa Berry, Andy Abbott, Donna Abbott and Barry Redlevske have led the organizers in bringing the pull to Avon.
Andy Abbott is just a couple of points behind the leader in the Northern Penobscot Pulling Association standings. Last year his 1984 Chevy named “Redneck Cadillac” took second place in the Maine state championships.
“This is just going to be a fun day with some trophies and money for prizes,” said Berry.
You can also find Redlevske’s “All My Overtime” or “Black Gold” driven by either Jonathan Jordan or Stephen Haines. It’s expected that Janet White and Derek White will also be there as well as many other locals. Many of the trucks participate in events similar to this one all summer long. Abbott and his “Redneck Cadillac” are focused on the state championships this year and looking to grab the top title.
Berry explained that the event is being held in memory of Donnie Fournier who passed away in March of 2010. Fournier was an avid truck puller and his “Green Hornet” is expected to be at the event in his honor Sunday.
As expected they’ll also host a “powder puff” class for the ladies.
The admission for adults is $5, children 5-12 years old is $2 and five-and-under are free.
The registration for trucks is $10 per truck per class. Registration is expected to close at 10:30 a.m. with the first event starting at 11.
