Sugarloaf statement on tramway board report
CARRABASSETT VALLEY — Friday, June 10 the Maine State Board of Elevator and Tramway Safety released its final report regarding the Spillway chairlift deropement Dec. 28, 2010, thus concluding its investigation into the accident.
Commenting on the report, Sugarloaf General Manager John Diller said the following:
“Our first concern remains with those who were injured during the incident. We continue to wish them the very best in their recoveries and remain ready to assist in any way we can.
“While the report did not identify a specific cause for the deropement, it did identify mechanical, environmental and human factors that may have contributed. The safety of our guests and employees is of the utmost importance, and we are all extremely grateful to the board and other experts for their analysis and assistance.
“The report identifies potential deficiencies in certain training and record-keeping procedures. After the incident, we conducted a thorough review of our lift maintenance procedures, internally and with outside experts, and instituted several changes. These include new standardized and formalized processes for training our lift maintenance personnel, and new, standardized record keeping procedures.
“The Spillway East chair was slated for replacement prior to the accident. It is now being dismantled in preparation for the installation of the new lift. Two other lifts at Sugarloaf with sheave train assemblies similar to those that were in place on Spillway East will be retrofitted over the summer with fixed sheave train assemblies as a precautionary measure.
“All of us at Sugarloaf thank the tramway board and the many engineers and lift experts who worked with us throughout the investigation. We’d also like to thank the law enforcement and first response personnel who assisted us during the incident itself, and the many thousands of loyal Sugarloafers for their support during this event.”
