CARRABASSETT VALLEY — It’s that time of year again when hope falls from the sky in the form of snow and the Charity Summit Ball brings months and months of fundraising and organizing to an apex.

This year, the goal for 2012 is to make $200,000 with all proceeds as usual going to both the Maine Cancer Foundation and the Martha B. Webber Breast Care Center. The big draw as always being the raffle to win a two-year Sugarloaf Alpine/Nordic Ski pass with tickets on sale for $10 a piece or $25 for three.

This year there is a plethora of interesting auction items that have been donated. Here are just a few of them to get you thinking about what you might bid on: a sterling silver Sugarloaf belt buckle made by Bill Royall; a painting of Seth Wescott in Alaska signed by Seth; a “keepah” bracelet made by Nate Hicks of Fishbone Metalworks; a clock made entirely of bike parts by Mark Royall; a Spillway chair bench donated by Sugarloaf; a solid cherry wood rocker donated by SugarWood Gallery; several different day and week stays in beautiful locations on the coast; a VIP tour for four to the USA ski jumping training camp at either Lake Placed or Park City; Seaworld “Trainer for a day” pass for four; and a beautiful Sugarloaf Stained Glass piece donated by Chris Proulx.

Besides this list there are many other photos and prints, gift baskets, and more donated by many other local artists and companies.

This year the Charity Summit introduced the new “Hands for a Cure.” Jan. 28 between 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. if you ski the Superquad, you will be given a card for each run you make. Turn in your best poker hand by 2 p.m. at the Loafer’s Reception and win prizes.
