Roadrunners struggle
Mt. Abram’s Ethan Boyd (#21) and Dylan Ireland (#22) hustle to keep pace with Spruce Mountain’s Zach Bonnevie, who drives to the hoop and scores. (Heidi Murphy photo) SALEM — The Roadrunner gang has been on a tough spree as of late. So far the varsity has gone winless for nine games this month falling to the likes of Wiscasset, Dirigo, Winthrop, Madison, Hall-Dale, Telstar, St. Doms, Mountain Valley, and most recently Spruce Mountain —losing 84-31 Thursday against the Jay area team.
Ian James led the team with 14 of the 31 points. Tyler Hupper was second team with six. The opposition’s top scorer had 25 points over the course of the night.
One of the big factors in the game for the Roadrunners was the amount of fouls. With 14 fouls, the Mt. Abram team gave Spruce Mountain 24 foul shots, and the Phoenix boys made 11 of them.
The team had its best run at the end of the game, putting up a good fight that unfortunately proved unsuccessful for the Roadrunners.
Earlier in the evening, the JV boys also fell to the Phoenix, 73 to 22. The home team scoring was spread out extremely thin between all the team members, with the team high scorer being Logan Boyce with 4 points. One thing that hindered the team’s performance is the one foul shot made in six attempts. The team gave their opponents six foul shots, and the Spruce Mountain team made four of them.
Tuesday, Jan. 24, the Mt. Abram Junior Varsity team took on Carrabec but fell 50-44 in what was a really close game. The team was able to turn nine foul shots into four points. On the contrary, Carrabec only made three of 11 free throws.
The team leader for the day was Calum Dixon with 11 points, and the runner-up was Amos Withee with eight.
The team stormed coming out of the first half and made the game a heck of a lot closer than it looked to be at the end of the first half. The JV team fouled 10 times, while they only got fouled seven. This game was a disappointing loss for a JV team that has had an otherwise pretty decent season.
The boys’ teams now turn their attention to upcoming games at Lisbon (Jan. 30), a rematch with Dirigo (Hhome, Feb. 2), at Madison (Feb. 6), and home with St. Doms (Feb. 8).
