Vandalism on the trails

By Bob Gray Irregular Staff

EUSTIS — Eight large signs and “lots” of little State service signs that had been installed on snowmobile trails in the Eustis area the second week of February had all been destroyed before the week was out, said Sandy Isgro, who hand-painted the large ones.

The signs provided information on the availability of food, lodging and fuel to snowmobilers using the club’s trails. The State service signs were similar to those found on State highways.

Monday morning, Feb. 13, Isgro found one of the large ones broken clear in two and leaning against her Main Street Stratton business. She said they had been installed high off the trails using the bed of a pickup truck so they were out of easy reach.

“The person (responsible) either ripped them apart or took them with them,” said Isgro, an Arnold Trail Snowmobile Club business member and Vice President of the Flagstaff Area ATV Club.

Isgro brought her concerns to the Eustis Selectmen at their Feb. 14 meeting.

She said that first Selectman Jay Wyman said they will not tolerate such vandalism and assured Isgro they were taking these acts very seriously. Selectmen Jane Wilkinson and John Caldwell concurred, according to Isgro.

The signs were paid for using taxpayer money; money allocated to the snowmobile club by the townspeople at the annual town meetings.

Anyone with information or who is a witness to this or future destruction, can report it anonymously to the police or the Eustis selectmen, and are urged to do so.

“Our visitors cannot be misled. Missing signs can lead to visitors on wrong trails, and (ultimately) the club losing the use of some of our trails,” said Isgro.
