Sugarloaf Golf Club open

CARRABASSETT VALLEY — The Sugarloaf Golf Club kicked off its 27th season Friday, May 25. Sugarloaf is the number one golf course in Maine according to Golf Digest’s most recent course rankings.

The course hosted its annual “Memorial Day Scramble” May 26 and 27.

In April, Sugarloaf announced that seven-time Maine Amateur Champion and Maine Golf Hall of Fame member Abby Spector will join the club as Head Golf Professional this season. Spector was on hand for the course opening last weekend.

The course featured 16 holes during opening weekend while work continues on replacements for two bridges that were damaged during Tropical Storm Irene last August. The bridges are expected to be completed within two weeks.

The 2012 season will also see the installation of a new, $1.7 million irrigation system, to replace the existing irrigation system. Work on the new irrigation will continue throughout the summer.

The Sugarloaf Golf Club has consistently been ranked as one of Maine and New England’s premier golf courses since it opened 26 years ago.
