August moon on the rise

A bright full August moon was white as it rose the evening of Aug. 18 and rose red the following evening as it began the waning cycle. According to Farmers Almanac, fishing tribes are given credit for naming this moon Sturgeon Moon since the fish were most readily caught in August. A few tribes named it the Red Moon because as it rose it appears reddish through late summer haze. The August full moon is also known as the Green Corn Moon. (Dee Menear photos)
